A multi-agent system is an architecture where two or more AI agents work together on a shared objective, each handling a specific sub-task and passing results to the next agent in the workflow. The system produces outcomes that no single agent could achieve on its own.

Think about how a marketing campaign actually gets executed. One person writes the brief. Another creates the content. Someone else handles distribution. A fourth monitors performance. A multi-agent system works the same way, except the team members are AI agents.

Each agent in the system has a defined role, a set of tools it can use, and clear rules about when and how it communicates with other agents. A research agent pulls competitor data. A strategy agent analyzes that data and identifies gaps. A content agent generates briefs based on those gaps. A QA agent checks the output against brand guidelines. They run in sequence or in parallel, depending on the task, and the orchestration layer keeps them aligned.

How does a multi-agent system actually work?

Every multi-agent system has three core components: specialized agents with defined roles, a communication protocol that governs how they share data, and an orchestration layer that coordinates the overall workflow.

Task Decomposition

The orchestrator receives a high-level objective and breaks it into sub-tasks that individual agents can handle. “Produce a weekly competitor report” becomes: pull ranking data for 200 keywords, compare against last week’s positions, identify content gaps, analyze competitor backlink changes, and compile findings into a narrative summary.
