Each platform has its own quirks. ChatGPT tends to favor well-known brands and authoritative domains, but it’s inconsistent. Ask the same question twice and you’ll sometimes get different brands mentioned. Perplexity is the most citation-heavy. It almost always shows sources, which means your content structure matters enormously. Google AI Overviews pull directly from the search index, so there’s overlap with your traditional SEO. But the selection criteria are different. Pages that rank #1 organically don’t always appear in AI Overviews.

Category 4: Comparison prompts (40-50 prompts). “[Your brand] vs [Competitor A].” “[Competitor A] vs [Competitor B]” (do you appear even when not named?). “Differences between [Option A] and [Option B].” Comparison prompts are goldmines because the user is actively deciding.

Category 5: Industry/topic prompts (60-80 prompts). These test your topical authority. “What are the latest trends in [your industry]?” “How does [industry concept] work?” “Best practices for [topic].” If AI cites you as an authority on your own industry topics, your content strategy is working.

Category 6: Local/intent prompts (30-40 prompts). “[Service] near me.” “[Service] in [city].” “Where can I get [product] in [location]?” These are critical for businesses with physical locations or geographic service areas.

The prompt library should include variations in phrasing. Don’t just test “best SEO company in Mumbai.” Also test “top SEO firm Mumbai,” “which SEO agency should I hire in Mumbai,” “Mumbai SEO company recommendations,” and “I need SEO help for my business in Mumbai.” AI platforms respond differently to different phrasings of the same intent.

How do you actually run the test?

Here’s the step-by-step process. We’ve refined this over 8+ audits across different industries.

Step 1: Set up clean testing environments. Use incognito/private browsing. Log out of all accounts (especially Google). Use a VPN set to your target geography. You want to eliminate personalization bias. AI platforms customize responses based on your browsing history, location, and account data. Your results need to reflect what a new customer would see, not what you see.

Step 2: Run each prompt on all 4 platforms. Copy the exact same prompt into ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and a Google search (to check for AI Overviews). Record the full response. Screenshots work, but text extraction is better because you’ll want to search through responses later. We use a spreadsheet with columns for: prompt, platform, full response text, brand mentioned (yes/no), citation position (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.), sentiment (positive/neutral/negative), competitors mentioned, and source URLs cited.

Step 3: Run prompts at different times. AI responses aren’t static. Run your most important prompts (brand and category queries) at least 3 times over a 7-day period. This gives you a consistency score. A brand that appears in 3 out of 3 runs has 100% consistency. A brand that appears in 1 out of 3 has 33% consistency. Consistency matters as much as presence.

Step 4: Don’t modify prompts mid-test. Stick to your prompt library. The temptation is to start tweaking prompts when you’re not getting the results you want. Don’t. The whole point is to measure reality, not to find prompts that make you look good.

How do you score the results?

Raw data is useless without a scoring framework. Here’s the one we use at ScaleGrowth.Digital.

Per-response scoring (0-3 scale):

  • 0 = Not mentioned. Your brand doesn’t appear anywhere in the response.
  • 1 = Mentioned, not recommended. Your brand appears but in a neutral or unfavorable context. “Some users have reported issues with [Brand]” or “[Brand] is one option, but [Competitor] is generally preferred.”
  • 2 = Mentioned positively. Your brand appears with positive framing. “[Brand] offers [good thing]” or “[Brand] is known for [strength].”
  • 3 = Recommended or cited as top option. Your brand is positioned as a recommendation. “[Brand] is a strong choice for…” or appears as the #1 citation.

Plot these metrics by prompt category. You’ll almost certainly find that you’re strong in some areas and invisible in others. Most brands we audit score well on brand prompts (when someone asks about them by name) but poorly on category and problem/solution prompts (when someone asks for recommendations without naming a brand). The category and problem/solution gaps are where the real opportunity sits.

What patterns should you look for in the data?

After scoring 1,200+ data points, certain patterns will jump out. Here are the five most common ones we see.

Pattern 1: Strong brand recognition, weak category presence. AI knows who you are but doesn’t recommend you when someone asks for the best option. This usually means your content talks about yourself but doesn’t position you within your category. Fix: create comparison content, “best of” roundups where you’re included, and category-defining content that positions your brand naturally.

Pattern 2: Present on Perplexity, absent on ChatGPT. Perplexity pulls from live web search, so if your SEO is decent, you’ll show up there. ChatGPT relies more heavily on training data and entity recognition. Being absent from ChatGPT usually means you don’t have enough authoritative mentions across the web to be encoded in the model’s knowledge. Fix: earn mentions on high-authority sites, build Wikipedia presence, get cited in industry publications.

Pattern 3: Competitor dominates AI responses despite weaker SEO. This happens more often than you’d think. A competitor with fewer backlinks and lower domain authority appears in AI responses more frequently because their content is structured for AI citation. They use definition blocks, immediate answer formatting, and consistent entity markup. Fix: restructure your content for AI readability (more on this below).

Pattern 4: Inconsistent responses across runs. You appear sometimes but not always. Low consistency scores (below 50%) indicate that AI is uncertain about your brand’s relevance. You’re on the edge of inclusion. Fix: increase the volume and consistency of your entity signals. More content, more structured data, more consistent terminology across your site.

Pattern 5: Negative or outdated information. AI mentions you but with incorrect facts, old product information, or negative sentiment from reviews or news coverage. This is actually worse than being invisible because it actively damages your brand. Fix: publish corrective content, update your key pages, and build an entity truth document (a single page with all your brand facts that AI can reference).

What content changes improve AI visibility?

Once you’ve identified the gaps, here’s what to fix. These are ranked by impact based on our work across multiple audits.

Fix #1: Add immediate answer blocks to every key page. The first 300 characters after every heading should contain a direct, standalone answer. No preamble. No “let’s look at this topic.” Just the answer. AI models extract these blocks as citation candidates. In our testing, pages with clear answer blocks get cited 60-75% more often than pages that bury the answer in the third paragraph.

Fix #2: Create definition blocks for your core concepts. Write one-sentence definitions for every important term in your business. Use the same definition verbatim across all pages. Format: “[Term] is [category] that [distinguishing characteristics].” When multiple pages on your site define the same concept the same way, AI models treat that definition as authoritative.

Fix #3: Use question-format headings that match real prompts. Instead of “Our SEO Services,” use “What does an SEO audit include?” Instead of “AI Visibility Tools,” use “How do I check my brand’s AI visibility?” These headings match the exact queries people type into AI platforms, which increases the chance of your content being pulled into responses.

Fix #4: Build an entity truth document. Create a single, comprehensive page on your site that contains every important fact about your brand: what you do, who leads the company, when you were founded, what industries you serve, what your methodology is, key metrics, and contact details. Mark it up with Organization schema. This gives AI a single source of truth about your brand. Without it, AI will cobble together information from random pages, and it’ll often get things wrong.

Fix #5: Publish comparison content. Write “[Your Brand] vs [Competitor]” pages for your top 5-10 competitors. These directly answer comparison prompts in AI platforms. Be honest in your comparisons. State where competitors are stronger and where you’re stronger. AI models favor balanced, factual comparison content over one-sided marketing.

Fix #6: Add FAQ schema to every service and product page. FAQ schema gives AI platforms a structured way to pull answers from your site. Use real questions (check Google’s People Also Ask for your keywords) and provide concise, direct answers. Each answer should be 40-60 words. Tight enough for AI to cite directly.

How often should you run an AI visibility audit?

Quarterly, minimum. AI platforms update their models and retrieval systems constantly. Google pushes AI Overview changes every few weeks. ChatGPT’s knowledge gets updated with new training data. Perplexity’s real-time retrieval means your visibility there can shift whenever your organic rankings change.

What’s the connection between SEO and AI visibility?

They’re not the same thing, but they’re deeply connected.
