LLM SEO gets your brand cited when people ask ChatGPT for recommendations, when Gemini summarizes your industry, when Perplexity answers questions about your category. These are different systems with different citation preferences. Optimizing for one doesn’t automatically cover the others.
LLM SEO is the practice of optimizing your brand’s content so that large language models like GPT-4, Gemini, Claude, and Llama cite your brand when generating answers to user queries. It’s distinct from traditional search engine optimization because LLMs don’t rank pages in a list. They generate answers and attribute them to sources they’ve determined are trustworthy and relevant.
Here’s what that means at three levels.
When a CEO asks ChatGPT “what’s the best approach to digital marketing for a financial services brand,” the model pulls from sources it trusts. Maybe it cites McKinsey. Maybe it cites HubSpot. Maybe it cites your competitor. The question is whether it cites you. LLM SEO is the work you do to make your brand one of those cited sources, across every major AI platform, not just Google.
Right now, most Indian brands are invisible to these systems. We’ve tested over 300 prompts across financial services, healthcare, and SaaS verticals. In about 70% of cases, the brands that appear in AI-generated answers are global players, not the Indian companies that actually dominate those markets domestically. That’s a gap, and it’s one that closes with specific, testable optimization.
LLMs generate answers through two mechanisms. The first is their training data: the massive corpus of web content they were trained on, which creates the model’s “knowledge” about topics and brands. The second is retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), where the model fetches real-time information from the web during query processing. ChatGPT uses Bing for real-time retrieval. Perplexity runs its own web crawls. Gemini pulls from Google’s index. Each system has different retrieval preferences, different weighting for structured data, and different patterns for which sources they cite.
This is why LLM SEO is fundamentally different from Google SEO. Ranking first on Google doesn’t mean ChatGPT will cite you. Bing’s index, which powers ChatGPT’s retrieval, has different ranking factors. Perplexity’s crawler has different content preferences. You need a multi-platform approach.
Over 14 months of running AI visibility audits, we’ve identified clear patterns. Brands that get cited across multiple LLM platforms share five characteristics: consistent entity definitions across their domain, definition-first content blocks for key terms, clean structured data (especially Organization and Person schema), content that directly answers questions in the first 50-80 words after each heading, and external validation signals like Wikipedia mentions, industry publication citations, and Wikidata entries.
Brands that rank well on Google but fail on LLM platforms almost always have the same problem: their content is optimized for keyword matching, not for answer extraction. Those are two very different things.

They share DNA, but the priorities, tactics, and measurement are different enough that treating them as the same thing will cost you visibility on the platforms that matter most going forward.
The important point isn’t that one replaces the other. Traditional SEO still drives traffic, and it will for years. But LLM SEO captures a growing share of discovery that traditional SEO completely misses. A brand that does both is building on two foundations instead of one. A brand that ignores LLM SEO is building on a foundation that’s slowly narrowing.
ChatGPT uses Bing’s index for real-time retrieval when browsing is enabled. That means Bing’s ranking factors matter here, not Google’s. Sites that perform well on Bing but are ignored in Google SEO strategies often get cited by ChatGPT. ChatGPT also draws heavily from its training data (GPT-4’s knowledge cutoff is updated periodically). Brands with strong Wikipedia presence, academic citations, and industry publication mentions tend to appear in training-data-driven responses. Our testing shows ChatGPT favors authoritative, definition-heavy content with clear entity associations.
Gemini has the deepest integration with Google’s search index, making it the most similar to traditional SEO in terms of source selection. But Gemini weighs structured data more heavily than standard Google Search does. Pages with comprehensive schema markup, especially Organization, Person, and FAQ schema, get disproportionate citation rates in Gemini responses. Gemini also heavily favors Google’s own network: YouTube transcripts, Google Business Profile data, and Google Scholar citations all feed into Gemini’s source selection.
Perplexity is the most transparent about its citations. Every answer includes numbered source links, and users can see exactly which pages were consulted. Perplexity runs its own web crawler (PerplexityBot) and maintains its own index. It favors recently published content, pages with clear topical authority (many pages covering related subtopics), and content that’s structured for easy extraction. We’ve found that Perplexity is the most responsive to content structure changes: improvements in heading hierarchy and answer block formatting typically show citation improvements within 2-3 weeks.
AI Overviews sit at the intersection of traditional Google search and LLM-generated content. They use Google’s index but apply Gemini’s language model to synthesize answers. This means traditional ranking signals (backlinks, domain authority, page speed) matter, but so do LLM-specific signals (content extractability, definition blocks, entity consistency). The short version: 38% of commercial BFSI queries trigger them, and getting cited requires a specific content architecture.
Every LLM builds an internal representation of entities: brands, people, products, concepts. When someone asks ChatGPT about “the best diagnostic labs in India,” the model doesn’t search for web pages in real time (unless browsing is enabled). It draws from its understanding of which entities belong in that category, based on its training data and any real-time retrieval it performs.
If your brand’s entity signals are weak, the model simply doesn’t know you exist. It won’t recommend you. It won’t cite you. You’re not in its representation of your industry.
Entity optimization for LLMs works at three levels:
Level 1: External entity presence. Does your brand have a Wikipedia page? A Wikidata entry? Mentions in industry publications, news outlets, academic papers? These external signals feed into LLM training data and establish your brand as a known entity. Brands without external validation often don’t appear in AI-generated answers at all, regardless of how good their website content is.
Level 2: On-site entity consistency. Your website needs to describe your brand, your team, and your products in a consistent way across every page. We use “entity truth documents” as the canonical description, and every other page references those descriptions verbatim. When your homepage calls your company a “digital marketing agency” but your about page says “growth engineering firm” and your LinkedIn says “technology consultancy,” AI models lose confidence in what you actually are. Pick one description. Use it everywhere.
Level 3: Schema-level entity markup. Organization schema with consistent name, description, and founding details. Person schema for key team members with sameAs links to LinkedIn, Twitter, and external profiles. Product schema for your offerings. These structured data signals don’t just help Google. They help every AI system that processes your pages, because they make entity relationships machine-readable.
We’ve worked with brands that had strong organic rankings but zero LLM visibility. In every case, weak entity signals were the root cause. Fix the entity layer, and citations follow. We typically see initial LLM citations within 6-8 weeks of entity optimization, faster if the brand already has some external presence.
A citable content block is a self-contained passage, typically 50-80 words, that directly and completely answers a specific question. LLMs prefer to cite content they can extract cleanly and present to users without modification. If your content requires the model to parse through paragraphs of context, conditional statements, and hedged language to find the actual answer, it will find a source where the answer is cleaner.
Here’s what a citable block looks like in practice:

Citable block: A systematic investment plan (SIP) is a method of investing a fixed amount in a mutual fund at regular intervals, typically monthly. SIPs use rupee cost averaging to reduce the impact of market volatility over time. Most Indian mutual fund houses accept SIPs starting at Rs. 500 per month, with no upper limit.
That block works because it’s complete on its own. An LLM can extract it, present it, and cite it without needing anything else from the page. Compare that to a page that opens with “In the dynamic world of personal finance, many investors wonder about the best strategies for wealth creation…” The AI model has to wade through five sentences before finding anything quotable. It won’t bother. It’ll find a cleaner source.
We structure citable blocks for every key question a brand’s audience asks. Typically, that’s 15-30 blocks per page for pillar content, 8-12 for standard service pages. Each block targets a specific query variation and is written to be extractable as a standalone answer. This is the single most impactful content change for LLM visibility, and it simultaneously improves Google featured snippet capture and AI Overview citations.
You can’t improve what you don’t measure. And measuring LLM SEO is harder than measuring traditional rankings because there’s no single tool that tracks citations across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews simultaneously. Most agencies guess. We test.
For every brand we work with, we run a structured testing protocol:
Step 1: Prompt library creation. We build a library of 300+ prompts that represent how your target audience actually asks questions in your category. Not just keyword variations. Real prompts: recommendation queries (“what’s the best X for Y”), comparison queries (“X vs Y for Z purpose”), category queries (“top companies in X industry in India”), and definitional queries (“what is X and how does it work”).

We record which brands get cited, where in the response they appear, and whether the citation is for training-data knowledge or real-time retrieval. This distinction matters because it tells us whether the optimization should focus on external entity building (for training data) or on-site content restructuring (for retrieval).
Step 3: Citation mapping. We produce a citation map that shows, for each target query: which platform cites your brand, which platforms cite competitors, and which platforms cite no one in your market. The “no one” queries are often the biggest opportunity. If no competitor has claimed that citation, you can claim it with less effort.
Step 4: Gap analysis and prioritization. Not every gap is worth pursuing. We prioritize based on query volume, commercial intent, competitive difficulty, and platform-specific feasibility. A query where three competitors are already strongly cited across all platforms is harder to win than one where citations are sparse or inconsistent.
We rerun this testing monthly for ongoing clients, tracking citation share trends over time. The data compounds. After 3-4 months of testing, we have a clear picture of what content changes move the needle on each platform, and we adjust the strategy accordingly.
This is one of the less obvious but most powerful aspects of LLM SEO. When an AI model encounters the same term defined in multiple ways across your site, it loses confidence in your brand as an authoritative source for that concept. When it encounters the exact same definition, word for word, across 5-10 pages on your domain, it treats that definition as canonical.
We learned this through testing. One financial services client had 23 pages mentioning “gold loan.” Nine of those pages defined the term differently. “A gold loan is a secured loan against gold ornaments.” “Gold loans are credit facilities where gold serves as collateral.” “A gold loan allows borrowers to pledge their gold jewellery for funds.” Each definition was technically accurate, but the inconsistency told AI models that this site wasn’t sure what a gold loan was. Citation rate on gold loan queries: near zero.
We wrote a single canonical definition, stored it in an entity truth document, and deployed it verbatim across all 23 pages. Citation rate on gold loan queries across ChatGPT and Perplexity improved measurably within 8 weeks. Same content quality. Same backlink profile. Same technical SEO. The only change was consistency.

One sentence, following the pattern: “[Term] is [category] that [distinguishing characteristics].” That definition appears identically everywhere the term is used. No paraphrasing. Generally, no. If you want to be cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini, you need their crawlers to access your content. Blocking GPTBot, PerplexityBot, or Google-Extended removes your content from their retrieval systems, which means they can’t cite you even if they wanted to. There are edge cases where blocking makes sense (if you have proprietary content that shouldn’t be summarized by AI systems), but for most brands pursuing LLM SEO, you want maximum crawl access.
