How to Track Your Brand Across ChatGPT Gemini and Perplexity

You can track your brand’s visibility across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity right now, but it requires a structured methodology, not a single tool. No platform currently offers a universal AI visibility dashboard that monitors all major AI models simultaneously. Instead, you need a combination of manual prompt testing, API-based monitoring, and structured tracking frameworks. Why Does AI Brand Tracking Matter?

AI brand tracking is the practice of monitoring what ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Perplexity, and other AI platforms say about your brand, products, and industry when users ask questions relevant to your business.

It matters for three specific reasons.

First, AI is becoming a primary research channel. SparkToro’s 2025 research found that 28% of online searches now result in a zero-click AI answer. For B2B software queries, that number is higher: 36%. Users are getting their answers from AI, and those answers either include your brand or they don’t. Without tracking, you’re blind to an increasingly important visibility channel.

Second, AI can say incorrect things about your brand. AI models hallucinate. They confuse brands with similar names. They cite outdated information. They attribute your competitor’s features to your product. Without monitoring, these errors go uncorrected and shape how potential customers perceive your brand. We’ve seen AI models confidently state incorrect pricing, attribute wrong founding years, and confuse Indian brands with American companies of the same name.

Third, your competitors are already doing this. Brands that monitor and optimize for AI visibility early will build a citation advantage that’s hard to overcome later. AI models develop entity associations over time. The brand that establishes itself as the authoritative source for a topic in 2026 will be the default citation in 2028. Starting late means catching up against entrenched competitors.

What Should You Track Across AI Platforms?

AI brand tracking covers four distinct dimensions. Most brands only think about the first one and miss the other three.

Dimension 1: Brand mention presence. Does the AI mention your brand when users ask questions relevant to your business? This is the most basic metric. For a CRM company: does ChatGPT mention your brand when users ask “what CRM should I use?” For a hospital chain: does Gemini mention you when users ask “best hospitals in Mumbai?” Track this as a binary (mentioned or not) across your priority query set.

Dimension 2: Mention sentiment and accuracy. When the AI mentions your brand, what does it say? Is the information accurate? Is the sentiment positive, neutral, or negative? A mention that says “XYZ brand is known for poor customer service” is worse than no mention at all. Track accuracy by comparing AI statements about your brand against your actual product data. Flag every inaccuracy for correction.

Dimension 3: Competitive share of voice. When AI answers a question in your category, which brands get mentioned? How often? In what order? This competitive share metric tells you where you rank in AI visibility relative to your competitors. If the AI consistently mentions three competitors before mentioning you (or doesn’t mention you at all), that’s a prioritization signal for your GEO strategy.

Dimension 4: Citation sources. When AI platforms cite your brand, which specific pages do they reference? Perplexity is most transparent about sources (it shows inline citations). ChatGPT occasionally references sources. Gemini sometimes links to supporting pages. Tracking which of your pages get cited tells you which content is working for AI visibility and which isn’t.

How Do You Manually Test AI Responses About Your Brand?

Manual prompt testing is the foundation of AI brand tracking. It’s low-tech, time-consuming, and irreplaceable. Here’s the process we use.

Step 1: Build your query set. Create a list of 50-100 queries that a potential customer might ask an AI about your industry, product category, or specific products. Include:

  • Brand queries: “What is [your brand]?” “Is [your brand] good?” “Reviews of [your brand]”
  • Category queries: “Best [product category]” “Top [service type] companies in [location]”
  • Comparison queries: “[Your brand] vs [competitor]”
  • Problem queries: “How to [solve problem your product addresses]”
  • Purchase queries: “[Your product category] price” “[Product] where to buy”

Step 2: Run queries across all platforms. Test each query on ChatGPT (GPT-4o), Google Gemini, and Perplexity. Use fresh sessions (not logged-in accounts with history) to get unbiased results. Record the full response for each query on each platform.

Step 4: Calculate your AI visibility score. The simplest metric: (Number of queries where your brand was mentioned) / (Total queries tested) x 100. Track this monthly across each platform. A score of 20% means the AI mentions your brand in 1 out of 5 relevant queries. Our clients typically start at 5-15% and target 25-40% after 6 months of GEO work.

Step 5: Repeat monthly. AI responses change as models are updated and retrained. A monthly testing cadence captures these changes and shows whether your GEO efforts are producing results. Weekly testing for high-priority queries (your top 10-20) is worth the effort if you have the resources.

What Tools Exist for AI Brand Monitoring?

The AI brand tracking tool market is still immature. As of March 2026, no single tool does everything well. Here’s what’s available and what each tool does best.

Perplexity’s own analytics (for publishers). Perplexity launched publisher analytics in 2025, showing which of your pages are cited in Perplexity answers. It’s free for verified publishers. Limitations: only covers Perplexity, not ChatGPT or Gemini. But since Perplexity is the most citation-transparent AI platform, it’s a good starting point.

Semrush AI Visibility (beta). Semrush added AI visibility tracking to their platform in late 2025. It monitors brand mentions across ChatGPT and Gemini for a set of tracked queries. Limitations: still in beta, limited query volume, and the data refresh rate is weekly, not real-time. But for SEO teams already using Semrush, it integrates cleanly into existing workflows.

Authoritas AI Overview Tracker. Focuses on Google AI Overviews specifically, tracking whether your brand appears in AI-generated search result summaries. Useful for Google-specific AI visibility but doesn’t cover ChatGPT or Perplexity.

BrandMentions and similar PR monitoring tools. These track brand mentions across the web, social media, and news. They don’t track AI conversations specifically, but they capture the source material that AI models might use. Think of them as upstream monitors. They track what goes INTO AI training data, not what comes out of it.

Custom API-based monitoring. The most comprehensive approach uses the OpenAI API (for ChatGPT), Google’s Gemini API, and Perplexity’s API to programmatically run queries and analyze responses. Our recommendation: start with manual testing (it’s free and gives you the most nuanced understanding), add Perplexity publisher analytics, and invest in API-based monitoring once you have a GEO strategy worth measuring.

How Do You Build a Prompt Testing Framework?

Prompt testing is tricky because AI responses are probabilistic, not deterministic. The same query can produce different answers on different days or even different sessions. Your testing framework needs to account for this variability.

Use standardized prompts. Don’t vary your query phrasing between test sessions. If you’re tracking “best CRM for small businesses,” use that exact phrase every time. Changing to “top CRM tools for small companies” introduces a variable that makes comparison meaningless. Save creative phrasing exploration for a separate analysis. Your tracking queries must be identical month to month.

Test multiple times per query. Run each query 3 times per platform per test session. AI responses vary between sessions. If your brand appears in 2 out of 3 runs, that’s more informative than a single test. For high-priority queries, we recommend 5 runs to establish a reliable mention rate.

Control for personalization. Use incognito/private browsing sessions. Don’t test from accounts that have interacted with your brand’s content. Gemini in particular adjusts responses based on user history. You want baseline results, not results influenced by your own browsing behavior.

Document the model version. AI platforms update their models regularly. ChatGPT responses from GPT-4 differ from GPT-4o. Note which model you’re testing against. When a platform updates its model, re-run your full query set to establish a new baseline.

Test at the same time of month. Some AI platforms update their training data periodically. Testing at consistent intervals (first week of each month, for example) gives you comparable data points. Don’t test on Monday one month and Friday the next. Consistency removes noise.

What Does a Complete AI Brand Tracking Dashboard Look Like?

Once you’ve collected tracking data for 2-3 months, you need a dashboard that turns raw data into actionable insights. Here’s the structure we use.

Section 1: AI Visibility Score (headline metric). Your overall mention rate across all platforms and queries. Show the current month, previous month, and trend. “AI Visibility Score: 23% (up from 18% last month, up from 11% at baseline).” This is the number your CMO or founder cares about. Everything else is supporting detail.

Section 2: Platform breakdown. Split visibility score by platform. We consistently see different results across platforms. A brand might have 30% visibility on Perplexity, 20% on ChatGPT, and 12% on Gemini. These differences reveal platform-specific optimization opportunities.

Section 3: Query category performance. Group your queries by type (brand, category, comparison, problem) and show visibility rates for each. This reveals whether your GEO strategy is working for brand awareness queries but missing on comparison queries, for example.

Section 4: Competitive share of voice. For your category queries, show how often each competitor is mentioned. “In 50 category queries: Competitor A mentioned 34 times, Competitor B mentioned 28 times, Your Brand mentioned 12 times, Competitor C mentioned 8 times.” This competitive framing drives strategic decisions about where to invest in content.

Section 5: Accuracy tracker. Show the percentage of brand mentions that contain accurate information. “87% of mentions were accurate. 8% contained outdated pricing. 5% confused our product with [similar brand].” Flag specific errors with recommended corrections.

Section 6: Content citation map. Which of your pages get cited by AI platforms? “Blog post on [topic] cited 14 times. Product page for [product] cited 3 times. About page cited 2 times.” This tells your content team where to invest GEO optimization effort.

How Do You Fix Incorrect AI Responses About Your Brand?

When AI models say wrong things about your brand, you can’t call up OpenAI and ask them to fix it. But you can influence future responses by fixing the source material that AI models draw from.

Fix your own website first. If the AI is citing outdated pricing, check your website. Is the old pricing still on a cached page, an old PDF, or a press release? AI models train on all your content, including content you’ve forgotten about. Find and update every instance of outdated information on your domain.

Update third-party profiles. Your Google Business Profile, LinkedIn company page, Crunchbase profile, G2 listing, and industry directory profiles all feed into AI training data. If these profiles have inconsistent or outdated information, the AI will reflect that. Do a sweep of all third-party profiles and ensure consistency. This is tedious work. It matters enormously.

Create definitive entity content. Publish a comprehensive “About [Your Brand]” page that contains every fact an AI might need: founding year, headquarters, products/services, team size, key leadership, major clients (if public), awards, and key milestones. Make this page the single source of truth that AI models can reference. Update it whenever facts change.

Address brand confusion directly. If AI models confuse your brand with another company, create content that explicitly distinguishes the two. “XYZ Technologies (Mumbai-based SaaS company, founded 2019) should not be confused with XYZ Tech Tools (US-based IT services, founded 2005).” This sounds odd for a web page, but it directly addresses entity confusion in AI models.

Use structured data. Organization schema, sameAs properties linking to your official social profiles, and a consistent brand name across all structured data helps AI models correctly resolve your entity. If your official name is “Acme Tools Private Limited” but your website says “Acme” in some places and “Acme Tools” in others, add Organization schema with the canonical name and all variations as alternateNames.

Tracking frequency depends on your resources and the competitive intensity of your market. Here’s what we recommend:

What Metrics Should You Report to Leadership?

Most executives don’t want the full 100-query tracking spreadsheet. They want three things: where are we, are we improving, and how do we compare to competitors. Structure your reporting around these questions.

Headline metric: AI Visibility Score. Percentage of relevant queries where your brand is mentioned. Simple, comparable, tracks over time. “We appear in 23% of the AI answers our customers are asking. That’s up from 11% when we started. Our target is 35% by Q4.”

Competitive context: Share of Voice. Your brand’s mention count relative to competitors. “In our category, Competitor A has 40% share of AI mentions, we have 23%, Competitor B has 15%.” This puts your score in competitive context and justifies continued investment.

Quality metric: Accuracy Rate. Percentage of AI mentions where the information is correct. “92% of AI mentions about our brand are accurate. We identified and corrected 3 factual errors this month.” This protects the brand and demonstrates active management of AI reputation.

Trending metric: Month-over-month change. Show the visibility score trend over the last 6 months. Executives want to see direction, not just current position. An upward trend justifies the GEO investment. A flat or declining trend signals a need to adjust strategy.

Don’t overwhelm leadership with per-query or per-platform breakdowns unless they ask. Keep the executive report to one page. Save the detailed data for the team that’s doing the optimization work.
